Fatal accident near Grainfield…and other headlines: March 20, 2017

A Colorado man is dead after driving the wrong way on I-70 just east of Grainfield, crashing head-on into a semi. His Kia Sportage burst into flames and he was ejected in the crash. The driver of the semi, taken to the hospital. A passenger in the big-rig wasn’t hurt.
The full Kansas House is expected to take up bill protecting public employers from liability if an employee uses a concealed weapon wrongly or negligently while out of the building for work. The Federal and State Affairs Committee’s vote comes nearly two months after a lawmaker from Bonner Springs left a loaded handgun in a room at the statehouse. Opponents of the bill are concerned the language may be too broad.
No ruling yet from the Kansas Supreme Court on a suit targeting a two-year old abortion law. It bans an abortion method used in the second trimester. Analysts speculate that if the high court agrees with lower court rulings that the state constitution protects abortion rights, it could be a game-changer in the battle over abortion access in Kansas.
The state Department of Health and Environment adds extra public comment sessions to discuss extending the KanCare Medicaid program. The sessions begin today in Wichita, and include dates in Topeka, Hays, and Olathe, plus two in Topeka. As it stands now, the state plans to submit a request to the federal government that would authorize KanCare through next year, if approved.
Kansas Magazine opens up online voting for the best local eats in Kansas. 52 restaurants across the state made the cut for the online poll, which continues through the end of the month. The entries cover the whole state, from Kansas City to Kanorado and everywhere in between.
