Kansas lawmaker compares Planned Parenthood to Nazi Germany…and other headlines: March 14, 2017

A Kansas state legislator is standing by a comment he made in a letter comparing Planned Parenthood with a Nazi concentration camp. State Sen. Steve Fitzgerald of Leavenworth told The Kansas City Star he considers Planned Parenthood worse than the Nazi regime in Germany. The head of Planned Parenthood Federation of America called Fitzgerald’s comments disturbing and that he should be ashamed.
Republican Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins faces boos and shouts of “Do Your Job!” in defending the American Care Act, also dubbed Trumpcare. She had a raucous town hall meeting yesterday, the same day the congressional budget office estimated 24 million fewer people would have coverage by 2026 if the bill passes. Jenkins disputed the analysis of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office that 14 million Americans could lose their coverage next year.
Governor Brownback signs a final disaster declaration covering 20 counties after last week’s wildfires that burned more than 1,000 square miles of the state. The governor made an initial disaster declaration verbally back on March 5th. One death and 11 injuries have been attributed to the fires, and the governor’s office says more than 40 homes were destroyed. It’s unclear how many head of cattle also died in the fire.
A man and woman face charges after a high speed chase from Salina that ended with a crash in Clay County. The pursuit reached 105 miles-an-hour according to police, who also accuse the driver of trying to dump drug paraphernalia during the chase. The whole thing started with a report of a woman going through a trash bin at a motel. She had an outstanding warrant.
